The certificate — what it is and how you actually get one
KplannedLogistics first, deliberately, because this is where people waste the most time. Eligibility, the security vetting step, obtaining an identification number before booking anything, the testing centre process, and what happens after a pass. Also what the certificate does not authorise, and how currency is maintained — which changed from a paid retest to free online training and is still commonly taught wrongly.

The operating rules and the numbers
KplannedThe core limitations, learned as a coherent set rather than as trivia: altitude, speed, visibility, cloud clearance, daylight and twilight, visual line of sight, and the rules on carriage, operation from a moving vehicle, and one pilot per aircraft. These are the most heavily tested items and the most directly consequential ones, and they are worth over-learning to the point of instant recall.

Waivers and authorisations
KplannedThe rules are not all equally fixed, and the distinction between them is genuinely useful: some limitations can be waived on application, some cannot, and controlled-airspace access is a separate authorisation obtained through a near-instant automated system rather than a waiver at all. Confusing the two is the most common practical error a new certificate holder makes.

Remote identification
Kplanned🔴 The area where study material is most likely to be out of date, because the requirement is comparatively recent and phased in over several deadlines. Covers what must broadcast, the difference between built-in compliance and an add-on module, the exception for flying within a recognised identification-exempt area, and what is actually transmitted. Every source used here must be checked against current official material rather than a prep book.

Reading a sectional chart
KSplanned🔴 The highest-failure skill on the knowledge test, and it is a Skill element, not a Knowledge one — you decode a real chart excerpt under time pressure, and no amount of memorising the legend substitutes for having done it fifty times. Symbols, the numbers around airports, the shading and line styles that carry the airspace information, and latitude and longitude. Everything in the next two units is read off this chart.

Airspace classes and the vertical picture
KplannedThe mental model that makes chart reading make sense: airspace classes are three-dimensional volumes with floors and ceilings, several of them are stacked shelves around a busy airport, and the boundary on the chart is a plan view of a shape. The practical outcome is being able to say, for any point on a chart and any altitude, which class you are in and what that requires of you.

Special use airspace, temporary restrictions and notices
KplannedThe parts of the airspace picture that are not printed on the chart or that change daily — restricted, prohibited, warning and alert areas, military routes, temporary flight restrictions, and the notice system that publishes them. The transferable habit is procedural: knowing which sources must be checked before a flight, and that a current chart is not sufficient on its own.

Weather theory
KplannedWhy the atmosphere does what it does, before any product is decoded. Stability and instability, temperature and dew point and the relationship to cloud and fog, pressure systems and fronts, wind and its behaviour near terrain and structures, thunderstorm hazards including the outflow that reaches far from the cell, and density altitude — which affects a small aircraft's performance more than most operators expect.

Decoding weather products
KSplannedA Skill element: the observation and forecast formats are dense coded strings, and reading them is trained by doing, not by studying the key. Includes knowing what each product covers, what its valid period is, and the practical judgement of comparing a forecast against what is actually happening at the site.

Loading and performance
KplannedWeight, balance and what changes when a payload moves the centre of gravity, and the environmental factors that degrade performance — density altitude, temperature, battery state and condition. Small aircraft are affected disproportionately, and the failure mode is an aircraft that flies noticeably worse than the one you tested rather than one that refuses to leave the ground.

Aeronautical decision-making and crew coordination
RplannedAlmost entirely Risk elements, and the section that transfers furthest beyond aviation. Structured risk assessment, the named hazardous attitudes and their antidotes, self-assessment of fitness to operate, briefing a visual observer, and task allocation with a crew. It is examined because most incidents are decision failures rather than technical ones, and every element here needs a hazard AND a mitigation.

Physiology and fitness to operate
RplannedThe operator as a system component. Vision and scanning technique, the specific visual limitations of tracking a small object at distance, fatigue, dehydration, stress, and the rules on alcohol and medication. Risk elements throughout, and the mitigation half is the assessable half.

KRplannedThe procedural spine of an actual operation: inspecting the aircraft and the site before flight, maintenance and recordkeeping expectations, what to do when a link is lost or a battery fails, and the accident reporting thresholds and timeline. The reporting criteria are specific numbers and they are examined, so they get learned rather than approximated.

Night operations and operations over people
KRplannedTwo of the most significant liberalisations of the rules, both carrying conditions attached. Night operation requires specific training and anti-collision lighting visible at a stated distance; flight over people is permitted under a category system that turns on aircraft weight, injury potential and exposed rotating parts. Both are commonly summarised as 'now allowed' with the conditions dropped, which is the misunderstanding this unit exists to prevent.

Airport and radio operations
KplannedOperating near other aircraft: traffic pattern shapes and directions, runway numbering, the common advisory frequency and what is broadcast on it, airport lighting and markings, and right-of-way — where the rule for an unmanned aircraft is simple and absolute, and the reasoning behind it is worth internalising rather than memorising.

SKplannedThe capstone, and deliberately two things. A full-length timed knowledge test to a criterion held across repeated attempts rather than reached once — and a genuine preflight plan for a real location: the chart work, the airspace determination, the authorisation needed, the weather check and the risk assessment, written out.
